American monk

Last spring I had the great pleasure to meet Gensei, a young American zen practitioner who for a number of years had been living in a Portland temple assisting the resident priest.

He's now preparing to become a fully ordained monk and has launched a blog to chronicle his journey along the monastic path. In his most recent blog entry, Home Leaving, he asks,

In our present circumstances, cultural and otherwise, what does it mean to become a Buddhist monk? Not only to me but also to other people who are studying Buddha-dharma but aren’t interested in, willing or able to do it in that way.
